Speedy Creek Vineyard.  I first hiked the Speedy Creek Vineyard in Knights Valley with owner Dave Burton in 2008.  Speedy Creek refers to the 'speed' of their seasonal winter creek as it cascades down alongside their hillside vineyard.  Dave's Primitivo grapes have an intensity of character reflective of this true hillside terroir.

Brenda's Winemaking.  2009 was my inaugural vintage of Primitivo.  Primitivo is a close cousin to Zinfandel, which I have been making since 1995, and I used the same gentle winemaking and oak aging that I use for Zinfandel.  The wine was aged in 100% French oak barrels for 18 months, with approximately 50% new Francois Freres barrels.

Library Release Program.  I held back a small amount of my 2009 "mbf" Primitivo for release at a future date, both in 750ml but also a tiny amount of 1.5L bottles.  Somewhat forgotten in our cellar, we discovered this wine over Easter weekend 2020, tasted a bottle and decided it was the perfect time to re-release the wine.  I hope you enjoy one of my all time favorite wines with some additional time in bottle.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
At Release. Aromas of deep, ripe red berry fruit in the nose - there is a distinct 'grapey' quality to the wine's fresh fruit character. Chocolate, vanilla and spice notes from the Francois Freres oak barrels add some nice complexity to the nose and entry. The wine has excellent balance in flavors and mouth-feel, with nice chewy tannins in the full, rich finish. Library Release April 2020. Beautifully balanced, the wine's dark berry fruit, chocolate and spice notes have evolved yet are still very fresh. The most amazing part is the mouthfeel - still soft, supple and full of sweet fruit character.
