2007 Canis Major Syrah

2007 Canis Major Syrah

The constellation "Canis Major" resembles a large dog and is known as "The Greater Dog". It is a fitting name for our Reserve wines.

New Release.  Of all our Canis Major wines, the Unti Vineyard Syrah is the one with a “wild” side.  We think of it as our Marilyn Monroe wine - seductive and sexy, full and voluptuous.  Our 2007 vintage caries on in this tradition.

Unti Vineyard.  George Unti farms a diverse vineyard along Dry Creek's eastern half and we are excited about our Syrah adventure with him.  Syrah is a relative newcomer to Dry Creek Valley.  Our block (a whopping 3 rows totaling 186 vines) was planted in the mid 90's and is just now reaching maturity.  It appears that the collection of growing factors in our block - clone, rootstock, soils - is a good match, as canopy growth and fruit set for our three years has been in good balance throughout the growing year.  Whether luck or divine selection, we're pleased.

Brenda's Winemaking.  Brenda affectionately calls 2007 her “fog” vintage.  Not because of an abnormal weather pattern that influenced the grapes.  Rather, her winemaking memories for the year are a bit “foggy” due to the birth of her twins Katie and Porter on August 16.  By all recollections, no matter how "foggy" her memories are, Brenda's winemaking focused on gentle handling and the right choice of oak.  Brenda’s oak regime was 100% French, with approximately 40% new Bel Air barrels. The combination of Unti fruit and Bel Air French oak has become a “signature” for Brenda’s Syrah.

Wine Profile

Tasting Notes Signature aromas of wild strawberry jam. Definitely ripe red fruits that taste ‘wild’ in the sense of the hint of herbs and spice that complex the wine’s core berry fruit. Youthful tannins frame the wine's finish.
